Madagascar - Health and Community Center – Sambava, Madagascar – 2007-current
LGA Team: Lynn Gaffney, Matthew Radune, Faela Guiden
Client: Dammann & Company

The Dammann Company, producers of vanilla in Madagascar, is Lynn Gaffney’s family business. Recently the family and their French/Malagasy partner company, Vanipro, decided to build a community center for the people who work in the fields and in the fair trade processing center near the town of Sambava. The building of this center and the activities it will accommodate help to further a fair trade main goal; creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged workers. LGA’s plans for this center refer both visually and substantially to local vernacular construction. Local labor and materials are specified. The flexible and simple design will encourage the vanilla workers themselves to easily define the many possible ways the building can be used to strengthen their community.
